This is the story of Elpida who sat for five days by the side of the motorway waiting for her owners to come back for her but they never came.
There had been heavy rain for days as Elpida sat by the side of the busy highway, wet and hungry but she never moved.
Every day cars rushed by but no one stopped. One of them was a family taking their son to school in Limassol. The first day they saw her they too drove past as they thought her the owners will be looking for her.
On the second day there was more heavy rain and still she sat there waiting for her owners. On the third day they saw her still sitting in the same place, she had not moved. By day four the son was getting very upset seeing her sitting there but his father thought that as it was the hunting season that maybe she was being trained to stay by the road waiting to be picked up, as this is so often seen sadly on many parts of the highway network, so they drove by.
But on the following day, still there and in the same place, their son took hold of the car door and shouted to his mother ‘stop the car or I will jump out’. So, she pulled over and they went back to the dog who didn’t move. She was so cold and tired that she allowed them to scoop her up and they placed her gently in the back of their car. It is just after 6am and the mother phoned our emergency number explaining what had happened.
After dropping her son at school in Limassol she headed back to Paphos and our clinic where we were waiting for her. Every time we tried to coax her from the car, she went further back away from us. Many attempts with fresh bacon and water did not entice her to come to us even though she was starving. Wrapping her in a blanket slowly she came to the edge of the boot and was carried into the clinic where she was immediately seen by our veterinary team.
It was clear that she had survived by drinking the rain water. She was skin and bone and had clearly been used for breeding.Cared for at the clinic she slowly started on her road to recovery and was transferred to the shelter where she started to come out of herself, playing with the other dogs in the exercise yard.
